In a groundbreaking effort to combat climate change, Swiss tech company GlacioGuard has launched autonomous drones equipped with 3D-printing nozzles to artificially reinforce shrinking glaciers. The solar-powered drones deposit layers of eco-friendly "ice-seeding" foam over vulnerable areas in the Alps, slowing melt rates by up to 40% according to initial trials.
Each drone carries 20kg of biodegradable polymer gel, which expands into a protective shield when exposed to subzero temperatures. "This isn’t a permanent solution, but it buys time for ecosystems to adapt," said Dr. Elsa Müller, lead glaciologist at ETH Zurich, which collaborates on the project.
The initiative has drawn attention from the UN Environment Programme, with plans to test the technology in Patagonia and Greenland by 2026. Critics question scalability, though proponents highlight its precision compared to traditional methods like reflective blankets.
